Changes to Alberta Mask Mandates

Provincial mask mandates lifted provincially – but some therapists will still require masking.

Dear Alberta Massage Therapists,

The CRMTA would like to thank all our members for their dedication and attention to precautions and safety throughout the pandemic.  We know and appreciate this has been a difficult time for so many of our members and clinics over the last two years. But you have all worked so hard to implement new processes on sanitation and PPE precautions and massage therapists have successfully kept themselves and the public safe.

It has been announced that effective March 1, 2022, The Government of Alberta will lift the provincial wide mandate on masking in most public spaces. Please be aware there are some exceptions such as on transit and in hospital or high-risk settings. Please refer to AHS recommendations as required.

At this time this is in effect throughout Alberta. This includes the City of Edmonton, which lifted their masking bylaws effective March 8, 2022.

What this means for our members is:

  • In Alberta massage therapist are no longer mandated to mask in their practice except those practicing in municipalities where mask mandates remain. It is recommended to refer to your municipality’s current mask bylaws and if these mask bylaws are still in effect, continue to wear the masks under the municipal bylaw. Please be aware of municipal fines for non-compliance with bylaws.
  • CRMTA will continue to monitor the municipality updates and notify our members of any further changes for members.

CRMTA is aware that some members may be uncomfortable with the lifting of the mandates for their own safety and those in their clinic. CRMTA respects this and we encourage you to make the best choice for your practice based on your assessment of the risk and how you will feel comfortable operating your practice.

Please be aware that CRMTA will support any members who wish to continue to use masking in their practice spaces. This will also include the cleaning and sanitization that has been recommended.

For members who wish to return to previous practices before COVID changes please be aware you are still required to follow the Standards of Practice guidelines of CRMTA.
